Case Study A new customer presented a 2002 Ford Focus with an intermittent speedo not working. The first garage which was an independent which replaced vehicle speed sensor this did not work. Now car went to Ford garage No1 which rewired the vehicle speed sensor this did not work. Now car went to Ford garage No2 which changed the ABS Control Unit which for life of me I will never understand, if it was a Fiesta then maybe but not on a 2002 Focus, customer is now �1000.00 down . I code read all vehicle systems, found that in instrument panel there was a fault code for no vehicle speed information, there was no fault codes in engine management. Studed wiring diagram found that vehicle speed sensor info went to Engine Management first then sends this info to instrument panel via CAN Bus. My thinking now is that we have an engine managemet ECU fault but i now have to prove it, why does engine management ecu say no faults when there is fault code in instrument panel saying that it cannot see vehicle speed info, logic thinking is that instrument panel is working but engine managment is not, also there is a new vehicle speed sensor & wiring fitted. Connected scan tool went to live data in engine management also connected oscilloscope to vehicle speed sensor wire & went for test drive when speedo dropped off we had good signal going into engine management ecu live data was showing no speed this was enough proof for me to condemn engine management ecu.Customer found a second hand ECU which we fitted and coded to the vehicle , 2 years later still no faults. Customer went back to Ford garage No2 and got his money back for fitting ABS Control unit which in the end made him Happy.
